Obituary of Evelyn Henderson
1928 – 2012 Our beloved mother, grandmother & sister, Evelyn Henderson, passed away peacefully at the Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home on Nov. 3, 2012. Mom was born on Feb. 24, 1928 to Oscar and Kathleen Northey in the Salopian district near Tisdale, Sask. She attended school in Eldersley and at the age of 16 took the train out to Toronto to look for a job. She worked for two years at Eaton’s and Zeller’s and lived with her aunt and uncle. Upon returning, she worked at various retail stores in Tisdale, always being a dependable and hard worker! Mom met the love of her life, Jim Henderson, in Tisdale and they were married on Oct. 25, 1950. Their first born was a son, Robert, on Oct. 28, 1951. A daughter, Patty, was born April 11, 1960. Mom was the most wonderful, loving, patient mother, whose dedication to creating a happy, healthy home for us was always first and foremost! She was an awesome cook and baker, and loved to host family and friends for a meal or a party. Dad often claimed jokingly, “I taught her everything she knows!” You never went away hungry from mom’s house. When she wasn’t cooking, she was cleaning and so was nicknamed “Mrs. Clean”….the bleach bottle was always nearby. Mom was active in various activities in Tisdale including Sunday School teacher, Ladies Aid member, choir member at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the Lion L’s, the Legion, as well as attending and supporting us at our school, dance, and sports activities. She also worked full-time at Trotter’s Drug Store during these years. She was a busy lady, often up until midnight making sure everything was cooked, cleaned and ironed for the next day. She created many lifelong friends while living in Tisdale. Mom, dad & Patty moved to Hague in February of 1973 for dad to become Postmaster here, where, she again, created a warm, welcoming home for us. Mom and dad were a team and always supported one another so, although it wasn’t easy to leave friends and family behind in Tisdale, Mom stood behind dad all the way. Mom also worked for many years at Variety Shopping Centre in Hague until 1982. When dad retired, mom did too. Mom made many new friendships in Hague and was loved by all who came into the store to shop. Mom attended Hague Mennonite Church and enjoyed being an active member of the church Ladies Aid. Mom’s greatest joy was the birth of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren! She babysat often when they were younger and she always worried about how they were doing, right up to her last days. Her eyes would light up when they came to visit her. She loved to bake their special requests…it gave her pure joy seeing them eating! Mom lovingly cared for dad until his passing in 1999. She missed him deeply in the years to follow but kept busy with her yard, visiting her sisters, and helping us kids out whenever she could. She was always ready to have a cup of tea and a visit. Her deep faith in God always sustained her and she read her bible daily. All of mom’s nieces and nephews loved her so much and often came for a visit or to stay overnight at the ‘Henderson Hotel.’ Mom’s own health began to decline in 2003 when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In 2006, when she was unable to live on her own anymore, she became a resident of the Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home. The staff loved her and cared for her so compassionately. We are eternally grateful to everyone there for seeing to her every need. She loved you all too and appreciated you making her feel so comfortable at her new home. Thank you! Evelyn is survived by her son, Bob (Margaret) Henderson, and children Jim (Trilby) Henderson (Halle & Hayden); Katrine (Kyle) Christison (Jaden, Skylar, Keianna & Brynn), Marcos Henderson; and by her daughter, Patty (Clay) Kirby and children, Shauna (James) Bergen (Ryder, Carter, Nixon), Kyle Fedrau (Ali Sarchuk), and step-grandchildren Dylan & Shantelle Kirby. She is also survived by her two loving sisters, Alice Fyfe & Edith Manley, many nieces & nephews and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim in 1999, parents Oscar & Kathleen Northey & brothers, Grenville, Harry, Ernie, and Edward Northey. Our mother was a kind, sweet, gentle person who always saw the best in everyone! She gave us guidance when we needed it, she gave us unconditional love, always. She WAS the center of our family. We loved her deeply and will miss her every day, but we are so thankful she was our mom, grandmother, sister, & aunt……simply the best! May she rest in peace with dad by her side. – the family The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Hague Mennonite Church with Pastor Artur Esau officiating.
