Obituary of Johnny Giesbrecht

 

December 4, 1935 - April 28, 2023

JOHNNY WILMER GIESBRECHT, age 87, of Rosthern, Saskatchewan, very quietly and peacefully entered his Eternal Home in Jesus’ embrace on Friday afternoon, April 28, 2023, with his wife and a caregiver by his side, at the Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home. One hesitates to share anymore as this was such a beautiful, sacred moment. Much gratitude is given to the Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home for the kind and compassionate care Johnny received while living there.

 

Johnny was born to Jacob and Agatha (Martens) Giesbrecht on their homestead south of Spiritwood, Saskatchewan, Canada, on December 4, 1935, sharing his only sister, Rosella’s birthday which was four years earlier. And now they have both made their Heavenly Journeys four years apart.

 

In 1942, the family traveled by horse-drawn caboose and hayrack to Carlton, Saskatchewan where Johnny lived his boyhood years. Johnny was a very adventurous type of person traveling many places back in the day when a “thumb” was all you needed. He did so many things that a book could be filled and he did just that, wrote about his adventures that took him to the States and the Canadian west coast and back to Saskatchewan.

 

After his marriage on July 6, 1974, to Yvonne he pretty well stayed in Saskatchewan. He had his first two books published by Moody Press in Chicago, Illinois, USA in the late 1970s. Then he went on to write 19 more books which can be found on Amazon under his given name and pen name (Johnny Carlton).

 

To add to his creative and exciting life he fulfilled his childhood dreams of being a movie producer. He wrote the scripts, directed, acted in, and edited five movies: THE HERO; I BRAKE FOR COMMERCIALS; THE SUNSHINE GIRLS; CRAZY CHARLIE; and THE REWARD. Distribution was neither his nor his wife’s strong point and they hit a brick wall. He always felt so badly about this fact.

 

Johnny never felt his work for the Lord was done, even while in the Nursing Home he struggled to try to work and write. May he now be carrying on work for the Lord in a whole body in Heaven.

 

At the age of 21, he surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a fervent student of the Bible and was always searching for more truths. He was passionate that others would realize their need for a Saviour and trust in Jesus who paid the price to have our sins forgiven. Jesus says in John 14:6, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no one comes to the Father, but by Me.” More favorite verses of Johnny’s were John 3:16-18 “¹⁶ For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. ¹⁷ For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. ¹⁸ Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”  May these verses bless you in a new way.

 

Johnny is survived by his wife, Yvonne (Koosmann).

Yvonne’s siblings: Kathy (& Dan) Joyce; Willie (& Brenda) Koosmann; and sister-in-law Connie Koosmann.

Johnny’s sister, Rosella’s children: Doug (& Connie) Crowe; Karen Crowe; Sharon (& Danny) Schmidt; Maureen Crowe (& Brian); John (& Lisa) Crowe; Marilyn (& Marty) Fisher.

 

Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and their children on both sides, as well as numerous cousins, and friends.

 

Johnny was predeceased by his parents: Jacob and Agatha (Martens) Giesbrecht; Sister, Rosella Crowe and her husband, Bruce. Father and Mother-in-law: Wilbert and Ella (Jeske) Koosmann; Brothers-in-law: Donald and his wife Christine (Gilbertson) Koosmann; and Curtis Koosmann.

 

Johnny was also predeceased by grandparents from both sides of his family, as well as numerous Uncles, Aunts, and Cousins.

A Celebration of Life for Johnny will be held at the

Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home Auditorium

on Friday, May 19, 2023, at 2:30 p.m.
