We, the sisters, and brothers of Peggy Fay Bartel remember our youngest sister who died June 19 in her residence at Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home.  Born May 16, 1968, Peggy held the distinction of being both last and first in many ways for our family.  As a twin to Perry, she was born some twenty minutes later, making her the last of seven children born to our parents Margaret and Erling.  But Peggy lived her life embodying many firsts.  She was the first to give hugs when our family came together, the first to try to make peace when it seemed conflict was in the air, and the first to show us how precious and meaningful a sister can be because of what made her unique.

In her often quiet and reserved way, Peggy drew out the affections of our family, sometimes through a gentle touch or a cuddle, and often through her witty comments or teasing with us.  Our parents have both died, but Peggy’s life and legacy lives on with special and meaningful memories for each of her siblings and extended family members.  Pat and Tom, both old enough to have moved away from the family home before Peggy was born first grew to know her through homecoming visits. Jen was the oldest sister in the house for a short time, before leaving to John and Trude the respective roles as older brother and sister in the home.  Perry has always been affectionately introduced by Peggy as “my twin”.

As a family, we are grateful first to all the special relationships shared with Peggy over her many years with Waldheim Menno Homes and more recently Christian Horizons.  In so many ways this community has been her family and her security more than we could be.  We also thank the community at Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home for providing good care to Peggy in these last months and of course, the medical personnel who tended to Peggy’s needs along the way.

Thank you finally to Peggy, who knew how to make us all feel special.

 

Obituary from Peggy's Christian Horizons Family

 We are here to celebrate the life of our long-time friend Peggy. She was tiny, but so full of life.  I am sure most people that knew her can still hear her little chuckle when she teased her roommates as well as the staff. 

Peggy moved to Menno Homes in Waldheim in 1994, when she was 25 years old.  She lived with 42 others and had four roommates at that time.  She had lots of opportunities to do the fun things she liked. She loved playing ping pong and doing crafts.  Peggy made another move in 1999 to Garden Place, which is a large duplex.  She had seven roommates, and this became her permanent place in Waldheim.  Peggy loved her home and staff, and that love was mutual.  She always had lots of hugs for everyone around her.  Peggy might have been tiny, but she knew what she wanted. She could get your attention when she wanted it or needed it.  She loved music and there is always music playing at garden place.  She lived with music lovers.  The staff and roommates used to play Buddy Holly’s “Peggy Sue” in the mornings, and everyone sang it for her.  So much fun!  When Peggy was coloring or doing a craft, she loved having the music playing. 

Peggy’s sister Pat would send letters which she looked forward to. Pat and her mom would send pictures as well.  Peggy loved the pictures of the baby’s the most.  She always really enjoyed it when her family members would come and visit and sometimes would go out for meals.  Bringing pizza and donuts was a great thing to bring when you come to visit as well.  If you know a person that is crazy about their, sports that was Peggy.  She would watch sports for hours in her room and sometimes in the living room.  She watched curling, hockey and was one of the biggest Saskatchewan Roughriders fan.  She liked all the commentary after as well.  She liked her TV time and one of her favorite shows was Dancing with the Stars.  Peggy always had a favorite dancer when watching that show.      

Peggy always wanted to have the devotions read to her at bedtime.  The staff did this with her before she fell asleep. 

It was hard for everyone when Peggy had to leave Garden Place and move to Rosthern nursing home, but we all knew she needed more care than we could provide.  Her roommates were sad but being able to go and visit Peggy and take little gifts for her, made it easier for them all to accept. 

The house was filled with sadness when we heard of Peggy’s passing.  The staff bought one of Peggy’s favorite meals, pizza and pop, and talked about their loss and memories of her. There was a chat about “Pegs” and how she is smiling in heaven with her parents. 

Peggy will be so dearly missed by everyone that lived and worked with her.  Pictures of her will be here with her friends and she will be in our memories for a long time.

Our prayers are with her family now.  Thank you for sharing “Your Peggy” with us for so many years.
