Memorial Service for Robert Flath, 2:00 P.M. August 9th

December 8, 1934 - July 29, 2023

88 Years

Robert Walter Flath was born December 8th, 1934, in Tallman, Sask. to Robert and Emma Flath. In 1937, the family moved to the farm in Rosthern where “Bob” grew up and started his lifelong career as a grain farmer. His passion for the land continued as he took over from his older brothers, Art and Bill. He later farmed with his son, Jim, until his retirement.

When he wasn’t on the field, he could be found in his shop. He was always fixing, designing or constructing and was an amazing resource for the community. He was an unassuming and humble engineering genius without a formal education. At age 22, he and his older brother, Bill, designed and constructed a snow plane that has been restored and still functions today!

He loved to travel and fish with his family, creating many adventures and memories on his fishing boat.  He always navigated safely to shore, even in unexpected storms, and could produce the best fish fry with his catch. The grandchildren loved this traditional meal of Grandpa’s fresh fish, creamed corn, and potatoes.

He loved dogs and his beloved pup Sandy was always in the truck beside him.  Whenever family would bring over a new furry addition, he would immediately get down on the floor to greet them as if the dog was his own.

When the harvest was completed, he headed into the bush every fall to chop wood. This went on for many years and he heated his house in Rosthern with a wood burning fireplace. His woodpile remains and is still used by the family to build the most amazing bonfires!

Even in retirement, he continued to be involved in farming activities. He was the fertilizer truck driver for spring seeding, and always took the 4 am swather shifts in the fall.

He was involved with his church, Trinity Lutheran, in Rosthern as a board member and long-term treasurer. His faith in God and the love of his church and his family was his anchor throughout his life.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Carol, his brothers, Bill and Art, his sisters-in-law, Una and Julia, and his daughter DeLee.  He leaves behind his wife of 41 years, Eileen, his son Jim (Annette), daughter Renay (Darren), son-in-law Fred and six grandchildren: Meghan (Josh), Rachel, Jared (Nicole), Ashley (Ryan), Luke and Katie (Mason).  He recently became a great-grandfather to Lincoln Robert William born on July 7th, 2023.

He will be remembered for his generosity, his meticulous workmanship in everything he did, and his willingness to serve in any way he could.
