Miles was born on September 17, 1955, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Humboldt. Miles was the eldest of 6 children. He attended elementary school at St. Augustine, and high school at Humboldt Collegiate Institute.
Miles began employment at a young age, starting at Bethany Pioneer Village in Middle Lake. It was a job that Miles really liked, as he enjoyed working with the seniors. His employment continued with working as a pipe fitter, a section man with CN, a house framer, a bartender, and he worked on a paving crew with ASL.
Miles married Myrtle George on September 25, 1976, and they had a daughter Charity, and a son Chad.
Miles loved animals! He had many aquariums full of fresh and salt-water fish. His favourite fish was a clarias catfish, which could walk outside of the water. Miles had a talent for rehabilitating injured birds, an owl, sparrow, and a duck named Little Joe, to name a few. He was also a supporter of PETA and The Humane Society.
Miles was very artistic and was a perfectionist with his drawings. He passed this passion on to his son Chad. When the kids were young, he started building a Go-Kart, and Charity was excited to ride in it. Unfortunately, Miles just couldn’t quite get it finished.
Miles met Bertha Balman on April 23, 1993, and they were married in Rosthern on May 17, 1997. On their honeymoon, they toured Jasper and The Columbia Ice Fields.
Miles was a devoted sports fan. He cheered for the Edmonton Oilers, Edmonton Eskimos, the Dallas Cowboys, and following in his mom’s footsteps, the Toronto Blue Jays. Due to the influence of his grandson Eligh, he also started cheering for the Vegas Golden Knights.
Miles had a strong love of music, and his favourite bands were: AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath. Some of his musical thrills were, attending AC/DC, Bryan Adams, and Burton Cummings in concert.
Miles enjoyed watching movies, and his favourite one was “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”
Miles favourite dishes that his mom prepared, were yellow beans and gravy, cinnamon buns, and date pinwheel cookies. His favourite foods by Bertha were, butter tarts, potato salad, devilled eggs, and turkey dressing, (but no turkey!)
A highlight for Miles was attending Moorman Family Reunions in Alberta and catching up with extended family. He also enjoyed vacations with the kids, one being their Maple Creek/Drumheller trip. Trips to Chitek Lake with Bertha’s family were another highlight.
Miles was a very proud grandpa and was super proud when Eligh made the football team! He was also thrilled to be able to give Eligh, his 1991 black Chevy Silverado short box with step-side truck. It had been his pride and joy!
Miles loved working at the Maplewood Group Home in Rosthern from 1995 to 2011. While he worked there, he enjoyed taking residents Quinn and Allen to hockey games. Although considered non-verbal, he could usually understand them and enjoyed interacting with them. Due to his ailing health, he was unable to continue working at the job, which he truly loved.
Miles was a very determined, quiet man with an incredible amount of strength and resolve. He loved his family with that same quiet resolve.
Miles's time at Pineview may have been short, but he felt so part of the “community” and was truly touched by how much the other residents cared about him. Miles had a private faith, which was nurtured during his time at Pineview, and he recommitted his life to his faith.
Miles passed away peacefully on Monday, October 16, 2023, after a long courageous battle with several different health issues.
Miles, your pain is over, rest in peace.
Miles is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Bertha; his daughter Charity, his son Chad (Jayme); one grandson (Chad’s son), Eligh; the mother of his children, Myrtle George; his sister Colleen (Andy) Laskowski; his two brothers, Barry (Kathy), and Darren (Bernette Horassi); nieces and nephews, Trent Moorman, Danny (Jessica) Carroll, Aaron (Jen) Carroll, Chrissy (Curtis) Fortosky, David (Janelle) Carroll, Chantelle (James) Dunne, Wrenn (Chanelle) Moorman, Liseandra Moorman, Deanna, Eldon, Darren Jr, Garrett, and Andy Horass;. numerous great nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends.
