Obituary of Barbara Elder

August 17, 1947 - November 10, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Elder, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many.

Barb is survived by her sons Ryan (Lori), James, Jason (Emily); siblings James (Carole) Kraus, Carol (Rick) Smith, Vincent (Donna) Kraus, Mary (Brien) Brandle, Theresa (John) Bishop; and grandchildren Jackson, Nicholas, Addison, Riley, and Charlize.

Barb was predeceased by her loving husband Arnold Elder; parents Joseph and Louise Kraus; and brothers Gregory and Joseph Kraus.

Barb was born in Wilkie, SK and was raised on the family farm south of town.  Barb and Arnold met as young teenagers and were married on October 26, 1968.  Together they raised their three boys in Rosthern. She loved watching her sons in the many sports they participated in.  Some of Barb’s happiest times were spent with Arnold, her sons, relatives, and friends at the family cabin at Struthers Lake.

Barb worked professionally as an accounting clerk for MNS Equipment Ltd. in Rosthern for 13 years followed by 21 years as a ward clerk at the Rosthern Hospital. Barb was also a very active member of St. Odilon Roman Catholic parish for several decades.  After spending over 20 years visiting Arnold at the Mennonite Nursing home, she moved to Saskatoon in July of 2020 following his passing.  

In April of 2023, Barb was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. She fought hard and completed chemotherapy treatments.  Unfortunately, in mid-September, the treatments stopped working. Even once treatments stopped Barb continued to battle to have as many days with her loved ones as possible.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Odilon Roman Catholic Parish, Rosthern, SK on Monday, November 20, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow.

A Graveside Service and The Committal of Ashes will be held at Wilkie & District Cemetery, Wilkie, SK on November 21, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.
