Celebrating the Life of Elsie Margaret Epp
On November 10, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family, Elsie Margaret Epp peacefully passed into Eternity at the age of 105. Born July 16, 1919, in the Ebenfeld district near Laird, Saskatchewan, Elsie was the youngest of Gerhard and Sarah Andres’ children. Growing up on the family farm, Elsie’s early years were filled with tales of laughter, resilience, and the warmth of community. She often shared memories of one-room schoolhouse days, lively literary evenings, and her pride in hitting that legendary home run—a testament to her zest for life and infectious spirit.
Elsie’s faith was a foundation of her life. At 17 years of age, she publicly professed her faith in Christ, joining the Laird Mennonite Church. This dedication to her beliefs carried her through life, shaping her generous and compassionate nature. Her remarkable work ethic was instilled early in life. It became apparent when she was caring for a large family in Hepburn as a young woman, doing everything from household chores to milking cows. Payment for her first job came as a winter coat—an early symbol of the resilience and fortitude she carried throughout her life.
In 1938, she married Jacob Epp, beginning a journey together that spanned 51 years and several locations in Saskatchewan ultimately settling in Rosthern where they became members of the Rosthern Mennonite Church. Their love built a family of three children, and Elsie wore many hats to help provide for them—from working at the Rosthern Valley News, The Home for the Aged, the Mary Ann Potato Chip Factory and babysitting several children, some of whom became life-long friends. Elsie always seemed to be lending a helping hand with painting, tiling, or any job a friend or neighbor needed. She was known for her great cooking skills, scrumptious baking, gardening, preserving food for the winter, and sewing. Elsie’s home was a gathering place of warmth and generosity. Guests left with both a full stomach and a full heart, thanks to her famous “snacks” that could rival full-course meals. Her husband, Jacob, lovingly called her “Santa Claus,” and indeed, her spirit of giving seemed endless.
Elsie’s dedication to family knew no boundaries. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, making every effort to be present for her grandchildren’s graduations and achievements, no matter the distance. She delighted in each milestone and welcomed each new addition with open arms and a loving heart. Her fridge was covered with cherished cards from her great-grandchildren, proudly displayed as treasures of love and legacy.
After Jacob’s passing, Elsie found a supportive community at Bethany Manor in Saskatoon, where she spent many wonderful years, especially cherishing her 100th birthday celebration. Later, as her mobility waned, she transitioned to Spruce Manor Special Care Home in Dalmeny. She came to deeply appreciate the care and kindness shown by the staff, always expressing gratitude for even the smallest gestures.
Elsie’s legacy of faith, kindness, and resilience lives on in those who survive her: her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed by her love and carefree lively spirit. Her life was a testament to generosity, joy, and a deep faith in Christ. Elsie’s memory will forever light the hearts of:
- Ken (Irene) Epp, with grandchildren Brian (Brenda) Epp and Zachary; Glen (Kathy) Epp, Samuel, and Kelty; Shawna (John) Fisher, Charlotte, Jet, Violet, Ellen.
- Bev (Rick) Verreault, with grandchildren Dustin (Jamie) Verreault, Mia, and Trey; Amber Verreault, Brielle, Janaiya, and Kohlson Reid; Tenielle (Cameron) Bennett, Kalea, Safiya, and Kingston.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jacob Epp; her parents, Gerhard and Sarah Andres; her son, Lloyd Epp; her daughter-in-law, Sharon Epp; granddaughters Sharlene Marie and Donna Marie Epp; and all of her siblings.
Elsie’s life was a testament to unwavering love and boundless generosity. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her and those who come after, as she takes her place in her eternal home.
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ love and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame.
But wholly trust in Jesus name
Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Saviour’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
Lord of all
Forever in our hearts until we meet again.
