Alice Wieler

Obituary of Alice Wieler

December 5, 1937 – December 18, 2018 Faith, family, and community. This legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved Alice (Chomyshen) Wieler. Well known for her kind heart, good humor and hospitality, Alice embodied the values of kindness, integrity, and perseverance. Born to Ukrainian settlers Peter and Mabel Chomyshen on December 5th, 1937 in Hawarden, Saskatchewan. Alice was the youngest of eleven siblings. Her hardworking nature lead her to employment at the Federated Co-Op in Saskatoon following the completion of her high school diploma. It was here that she met her husband and life partner, Paul Wieler. Alice and Paul married in 1960 and lived on their farm at Carlton. Alice was actively involved in all aspects of their farming operation. Alice was baptized and joined the Tiefengrund Rosenort Mennonite Church. She enjoyed the time she spent on the church lunch committee and helping with different youth activities when her daughters were of that age. She would often mention how she enjoyed the musical talents of her church family. Paul and Alice had two daughters, Debra and Donna. She was a loving mother who enjoyed being part of all aspects of their lives. She always read to her girls, helped with homework, drove them to choir practice, and music lessons. Alice taught her children the significance of family connections, that faith would transcend hard times, and hard work always pays off. A believer in education, Alice instilled in her daughters the need for post-secondary training. She also encouraged her daughters to become independent and strong minded women. After her daughters were of age, Alice went back to school herself and completed a dietary service program leading her to work in care homes in the area. Her family was so proud when she received the distinguished graduate award. A lover of gardening, music, dancing, and cooking, Alice took life in stride with a balance of work and play. She loved to laugh, had a keen sense of humour, and sharp wit. Alice was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in the mid 1990’s. This was very difficult for Alice to accept. Her health declined gradually and she was able to live in their home on the farm, with Paul as her caregiver, until the fall of 2013. Alice went into a long term care home. This life change was devastating for both Paul and Alice. Paul was a devoted husband. He spent the majority of his time at the care home visiting Alice, making sure she was well cared for, and had everything she needed. Donna and Debra were also able to spend a lot of time visiting their Mom and will always cherish the memories of these visits. Paul and Alice made many friendships with the other residents, their families and the staff at Sherbrooke. Alice has departed this life but will never be forgotten. She passed away on December 18th, 2018, at the age of 81 with her husband of 58 years by her side, at the Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon, SK. Lovingly survived by her husband Paul, daughters Debra (Bill) Wieler-Spriggs and Donna (Vic) Gauvin; step grandchildren Catherine and Brook Pennington (Evelynn and Grey), Allan and Jody Spriggs (Thomas and Daniel), Mitch, Danille (Connor), Nick, and Vanessa Gauvin; sister Helen Matlock; sisters-in-law Elfriede Wieler and Betty Wieler; brother-in-law Jake Enns, and numerous extended family members. The Funeral Service will be held Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at Tiefengrund Rosenort Mennonite Church, northeast of Laird, SK. Interment will take place at Tiefengrund Cemetery.
