Obituary of Carl Otto Markwart
September 12, 1920 – October 2, 2016 Carl Markwart, age 96, passed away quietly on October 2, 2016 at the Rosthern Hospital. He was born September 12, 1920 on the family farm near Rosthern, SK to Fredrick and Carolina Markwart. He attended the country school of “Kenmar” near Arma, SK. He learned to work hard as all farm children at the time. In his early 20’s, he served in the Canadian Military and was stationed in Victoria, B.C. After the war, Carl trained and apprenticed as a watchmaker for his brother, Herman. In 1947, Carl married Elsie Penno and settled in Rosthern where they built their first house; which still stands on 10th street to this very day. Their union produced 3 sons. In the early 60’s, Carl went into the Dry-cleaning business. Later, when wash and wear became popular, he closed the plant and opened the Eaton’s Catalog Depot. After Eaton’s closed its catalog division he worked for many years as maintenance manager at the Rosthern Regional Park and Golf Course. He was a past member of the Lions Club and a former volunteer fire chief for the Town. Carl is predeceased by his parents, Fredrick & Carolina Markwart; brothers Rheinhold, William, Herman, Arthur, Adolph, Fredrick, and Gustaff in infancy. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Elsie; sons Harvey (Rosemarie), Larry (Mona), and Glenn; sister Martha, of Tisdale, SK; along with 10 grandchildren and many other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends. Cremation will take place. A Celebration of Life Service – graveside service at Arma Cemetery, south of Rosthern, near Hwy 11, Friday, October 21, 2016 at 2:30 P.M.
