Obituary of Helen Reimer

Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

July 14, 1934 - August 25, 2022

Thank you for coming to celebrate with us the 88 years of life that the Lord gave to Helen Reimer. She was born on July 14, 1934, to George and Anne Dyck in Orley, SK on the homestead. Helen was the second oldest child in a family of 4 children. Due to her mother’s health struggles, she took on the role of a parent at a very young age, and she did it well. At the age of 16, she started working outside the home to support the family. Her strong work ethic stayed with her for her entire lifetime. Some of the jobs she held over the years (to name a few), included hotel housekeeping, restaurant cook, hoeing beets, and sewing pantyhose in a factory. For this job, they were paid per pantyhose, and it was well known that her paycheck was always the biggest.  Her final and favourite of all jobs was the janitorial position she held in Burns Lake, B.C. for 27 years.  She was well loved there by both the kids and the staff. As she turned 65, retirement came, and they honoured her by including her in that year's graduation ceremony. The cap and gown photo was always hung proudly on her wall. She moved to Hague in 1999, where she stayed for 21 years, before moving to Red Deer, AB to be with her daughter.

Helen was baptized upon the confession of her faith in the summer of 1950 by Reverend John Epp. She married the love of her life, Henry Reimer on July 5, 1953, in Orley, SK.  Later, they were blessed with 6 children. She was always a devoted wife and loving mother. When Henry passed away, she accepted the circumstances as they were, never wavering in her faith. On October 19, 2014, mom shared her testimony and became a member of the Hague Gospel Church. There, she was encouraged through bible studies with friends, and she felt at home.

Helen enjoyed life and knew how to laugh. She had a great sense of humour, and together with her best friend Suzie, there was always a good laugh to be had. Those two were quite the pair, they shared a very special bond, and everyone knew it. They always took care of each other in times of need, lifting each other's spirits along the way. Her daughters-in-law whom she often referred to as “my Annie” and “my Carol” also held a special place in Helen’s heart. Once, shortly after moving to Saskatchewan, Helen popped in at the Village Inn where they were working, just to let them know she was going to the city with Suzie and asked if that would be ok.  She did this quite often,

having them know where she was always, was very important to her. Helen had a genuine love for everyone and always had time for everyone.  She was a good listener and always expressed an interest in the happenings of one's life. She was well known in the community as a great baker, cook, seamstress, knitter, and host.

She put her talents to use and kept busy year-round by sewing, baking, and knitting for many. This was very serious business for her, and she put her whole heart into everything she made. Just like times of old, pop in visits were a regular and welcomed thing at her home. No one ever left her house without something to eat or at least some cookies for the road. She was always prepared for company by having lots of food on hand. Helen had a gentle touch and a patient forgiving heart, she was a strong, but humble lady who didn’t complain. She’s a wonderful reflection of Christ’s love and an example for us all. There are not enough words to express the impact Helen had on the lives of all she knew, and the memories we could share could take a lifetime but it is best summed up like this. Loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, and bestest friend are all names by which she was known. Helen, we love you, and we will miss you greatly!

One of Helen’s favourite bible verses is John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Helen, you have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith. Now there is in store for you the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the right judge has awarded to you. And not only to you but also to all who are longing for his appearing.

Helen passed away peacefully at her home, in Red Deer, AB, with her daughter Lavinia by her side. Her suffering has ended. She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory, her children Lavinia, Harv, Larry, Art (Carol), Herman, Benji; 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends. She is survived by two sisters Elise Nickel and Olga Nickel. Helen was predeceased by her parents Anne and George Dyck, husband Henry Reimer, brother Richard Dyck, and grandchildren Lacey Reimer and Tyrone Reimer.
